Ohio Trooper Injured in Crash that Killed Firefighter

An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper and a Town & Country Fire District firefighter were working the scene of a single-vehicle crash when a commercial vehicle struck a cruiser and fire apparatus.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was injured at a crash at an accident scene that left a firefighter dead Monday.

The incident happened at about 3:15 p.m. after highway patrol troopers and Town & Country Fire District crews responded to a single-vehicle wreck along Interstate 71 in Wayne County, WKYC-TV reports. At the scene, Trooper Steven B. Hill worked on an administrative inventory of the vehicle just before it was towed away, while a firefighter finished report documentation.

Just before 4 p.m., a commercial vehicle struck a fire apparatus at the crash scene. The vehicle then slammed into a highway patrol cruiser.

Hill and the firefighter were struck in the collision. The firefighterLt. Philip M. Wigal, 35—was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hill, 37, was taken to the hosptial, and his injuries weren't considered life-threatening. The driver of the commercial vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
